2013 is finally here. And after a year with almost no exercice (due to a severe case of runner’s knee), unhealthy eating, and irregular sleeping habits, I’ve decided to get a better start in the new year.

I just arrived back in Copenhagen yesterday, and today I dragged myself out of bed at 6.40 am (earlier than any day last semester), got my running gear on and tried my first guerrilla cardio training in years. Although my knee is getting better, thanks to a lot of exercises I got from my physiotherapist, I still cannot run very far without feeling a stinging pain and making my situation even worse. Because of this I’ve barely been running/working out for a long while, but now I finally got fed up with the inactivity. Instead of running far at a steady rate (like my typical 5-15 km runs) I decided to try a short, but very effective alternative; namely guerrilla cardio.

With guerrilla cardio you start off easy for about 4 minutes to warm up. Then follows eight really intense 20/10 sec full sprint intervals and finally about 4 minutes to cool down. All in all I think the session went pretty well, except for me almost having to trow up after the 7th interval. But considering how little I’ve been working out lately, that’s pretty good. If I manage to do these kind of sessions two to three times a week, I will hopefully get in a lot better shape in not too many weeks.

But exercise alone is not good enough. Out with some of my more American habits, like a stack of pancakes for breakfast, and in with much more fruits, veggies and water. I will also try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night and get up at around 6.40 am every day, which means I’ll have to go to bed much earlier than I used to. I’ll try to get to university early no matter if I have a class or not, which will hopefully get my studying back on track.

I guess I should get around to reading The Power of Habit, which have been on my bookshelf for almost a year now.

Any goals for the new year?
